What: Toyota recently invested $370,000 in this nonprofit organization, which is employing the skills of volunteers from the automobile, aviation, and IT industries to develop a road/air quadrotor craft called SkyDrive.

The aerial car’s rotors remain folded while being driven on the road and unfold when transitioning to flight mode. Maximum flight speed is planned at 62 mph and maximum road speed of 93 mph.

When: Cartivator and Toyota have their sights set on the prototype lighting the torch in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Cartivator team aims to deliver SkyDrive’s first commercial model by 2025.

Who: The Japanese government is hoping that flying cars can play key roles during natural disasters as well as help with the traversing of mountainous areas and remote islands.
