So, You Want to Build a Vertiport. Here’s What It Will Cost to Build and Operate One

With AAM on the horizon, places from which to take off and land your eVTOLs and UAVs are a key component of the infrastructure

Whether for passenger transportation, package delivery, emergency services, military, civil defense missions, industrial, or agricultural purposes, the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) transportation sector in development will need departure and arrival facilities for the aircraft operating in this space.
According to a report entitled “The global vertiport market map and forecast 2024–2028,” compiled by the Global AAM/UAM Market Map research team, as of 2024, there are 1,044 vertiports planned for development globally between 2024 and 2028. Whether you’re a developer of these facilities or a potential investor, it’s important to know how much they can cost to build, operate, and maintain. Here’s an overview of several types of AAM takeoff and landing sites and an approximation of the associated costs:
  • Modular vertiports can range in cost from US$100,000 to US$275,000
  • Vertibases can cost $US500,000-US$800,000 to build with annual operating costs of US$3-5 million.
  • Vertihub construction costs are estimated at US$6-7 million, with annual operating costs of US$15-17 million.
  • Vertipad construction costs range from US$200,000 to US$400,000, not counting land acquisition costs or regulatory compliance fees with annual operating costs of US$600,000 to US$900,000.
What happens beyond 2028 is, at this point, anyone’s guess but it wouldn’t be imprudent to conjecture there will be even more vertical aviation operations likely leading to lower development and operational costs.
Top 3 Takeaways
  • Departure and landing facility development and operational costs for Advanced Air Mobility can range from US$100,000 to US$17,000,000 each.
  • The least expensive vertical take off and landing facilities are modular designs.
  • The most expensive VTOL ports to build and operate are vertihubs.
