Volocopter air taxi
Hannover, Germany - June 13, 2018: Volocopter - the world's first manned electric helicopter and air taxi is presented on the booth of intel at CeBIT 2018. CeBIT is the world's largest trade fair for information technology.

The World Economic Forum recently chose Volocopter, maker of air taxis, as one of the 56 most promising Technology Pioneers of 2019.

The German company makes electronic air taxis that take off and land vertically (eVTOL). It aims to use its emissions-free air taxis to help ease traffic in large cities around the world.

Volocopter’s flying cars look like helicopters but are based on drone technology. They can fly two people as far as 20 miles.

The World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers are early to growth-stage companies designing and developing technologies that may significantly impact the world.

Past winners include Airbnb, Google, Kickstarter, Spotify, Mozilla, and Twitter, among others.

“Our technology can be used to decongest megacities, and also to support air rescue missions or deliver heavy goods,” said Volocopter CEO Florian Reuter. “This versatility will bring lasting changes even beyond the mobility industry.”

Companies were chosen from various industries, including agriculture and cleantech.
